Is SuperTech Synthetic Oil as good as Red Line? Let's find out!

  • Published on: 18 March 2019
  • Why spend $11.95 for a quart of Red Line synthetic motor oil when you can buy a quart of full synthetic Walmart SuperTech for less than half that price? Is Walmart SuperTech as good as Red Line? Let's find out! I purchased both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Walmart or Red Line or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video! In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple and will advance to next round in the oil championship series.

The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support.

Why did you say that Red Line won this contest? SUPER TECH beat it in every test with the exception of the "cooking" test and even that was really too close to make a difference. The "film strength" test where you chose Redline over Super Tech was wrong (in my opinion) and you can visually see it if you look at the pieces of metal in the video after each test. You can see in the visual test that the Super Tech actually looked like better (less) wear and it didn't lose any more weight than Redline in the friction test. The temperature was worse for Super Tech but it was pretty close. The wattage test was better for Super Tech. I understand that your length and width measurements show otherwise but it is so close that I would argue that you may have measured incorrectly. Even thoughnit looks like Super Tech has a slightly longer pattern, I don't think it looks wider than Redline. It appears that the Redline actually has a wider wear pattern. Also, it "appears" (just by lookkng at the still frame at 4:37) that Super Tech has a "smoother" appearance which would indicate less friction (in my opinion) therefore the wear would be less. SUPER TECH clearly won the speed tests with new and "burned" oil. Even the cooking test was super close and not really different enough to make it worth considering either one a winner or loser. I'm confused about how you chose Redline to beat Super Tech and said "obviously" Redline won. No, it wasn't "obvious" at all. Even in your video we can see the evidence that Super Tech won. I think you should watch your own video again and change the results. SUPER TECH actually won this comparison. Or, do the comparison on more time. This one doesn't seem to have the correct winner.

I love all of the money I've saved over 20 years of using Super Tech Full Synthetic in all of my vehicles. No oil related problems in over 20 years now. I am still waiting to see the comparison of Amazon and Super Tech. I'll bet it's the same.

I have a 2010 XB with a 160k mile 2AZFE engine. These engines are notorious for burning oil. What oil would you guys advise?

Nice comparison. For a daily driver I wouldnt hesitate to run the supertech for a second. I tried it in a manual trans from 1991 that called for 5-30 conventional and it reduced friction to the point the brass stop rings wouldnt function properly if shifting somewhat quick. I switch to Redline MTL synthetic and works good again.

VIDEO IDEA ~ My brother is a manager at a large auto auction, and he talked to some auto engineers one time who said they conducted tests comparing conventional and synthetic oils, and that 4 qts. of conv. + 1 qt. of syn. mixed together performed AS WELL as 5 qts. of syn. I would love to know if that's true.

Always used pennzoil ultra platinum and switched to super tech because I was feeling cheap on the oil change. One thing I noticed is my cars oil temp runs hotter. Normally pennzoil 198ish and with super tech it’s like 210-212.

Have been using super tech for a few years now. A good quality oil for reasonable price. Recently, I found Costco also has an oil which beats Walmart’s price!

If you keep a car 60,000 miles the extra $400 you spend on fancy $$ oil only helps the next owner. All you've done is lose money.Too pragmatic and analytical ??

I always wonder how much gunk gets on the valves from the evaporated oil.No way of determining that.I wonder how good SeaFoam is cleaning those gunky valves.

In my opinion the super tech wins due to the minor differences in products but the huge cost difference

I use to test my oils in the sixties , for example I poured in a baby moon hub caps a cup of Pennzoil 30w and in the other hub cap I put Texico Havoline 30w, then heated them on a outdoor stove on the top (not in oven) for 20 min , well to my surprise Tex Havoline kept its consistent grade and the Penzoil got thick and gummy ( not good for lifters and bearings),(do not try this indoors, house, garage etc.)

  • william foreman

Is there anyway you could ever do a test on five or six different popular oil filters including Walmart super tech that would actually show them being used somehow and then show us which one is actually doing what they say they can do and which ones aren’t,,,anybody can cut them open and those cut open reviews are great however is there a way to really test one’s efficiency?

I would appreciate to see the comparison between Syn3 from Harley Davidson and Mobil1 or any heavyweight competitor in the market like Amsoil, Redlineor even Motul. I see a lot of tabu around those HD products. Personally, I think HD oil is an overpriced crap, you would help a lot to the biker community. Hope this commentary get enough support and thumbs up to be materialized by you. Great channel by the way.
