Is SuperTech Synthetic Oil as good as Red Line? Let's find out!

  • Published on: 18 March 2019
  • Why spend $11.95 for a quart of Red Line synthetic motor oil when you can buy a quart of full synthetic Walmart SuperTech for less than half that price? Is Walmart SuperTech as good as Red Line? Let's find out! I purchased both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Walmart or Red Line or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video! In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple and will advance to next round in the oil championship series.

The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support.

I’ve always used 10W40 in all my vehicles, even in the ones that say 5W30. Nothing bad has ever happened to any of my vehicles. Wonder if you have a video explaining what could happen if a different oil weight is being used...???

What would be interesting is if you could identify an absolutely awful oil.

This is a good test; it stands to reason it should show if one is better.

I get oil at dollar tree. My 1964 rambler seems ok with it but I probably wouldn’t use it in any car worth more than 2 thousand bucks.

I think a very good one would be a showdown of cheapest oil you can possibly find on the market VS the most expensive one. Same SAE grade and same API grade!

Red Line is way over priced. If SuperTech can do that much for so little cost then Red Line can be priced much cheaper. When you buy the Red Line you are buying a good oil, and, the high priced advertising. It's just not worth the difference in cost.

5 quarts supertech $15.98 5w-30 or 3 for under 47 shipped or 6 for under 89 shipped. 0w-20 is $14 something for 5 quarts. Best oil for the price.

A lot of these Walmart brand or amazon brand oil have a brand manufacture behind them when I worked for advance auto parts a few years ago the store brand oil was made by Castrol. So it wouldn’t surprise me if these oils are made by a big oil company behind them it’s like Advil and Motrin both ibuprofen but one is more expensive than the other but are both the same

It's always important to factor in cost with performance categories because if it's a really good value, who cares if it's slightly inferior to a top shelf product?

  • JackTannehillPromoter

Is there a reason we're using 5W-30 instead of 0W-20 oil in these tests? The last 4 vehicles I've owned used 0W-20 and that's what I thought was recommended in most new vehicles...?

    CKPHH   2 weeks ago

Hello Amazing one Project Farm!! I have this cool idea 💡 how about you use both Amazon and Supertech in your vehicle and drain them out around 4k miles to do the tests

SuperTech is Group 3, REDLINE is Group 4/5. But 95% of American Synthetics are Group 3, except for REDLINE, AMSOIL Signature, or Royal Purple, which are Group 4/5. The terms "Full Synthetic", "100% Synthetic" and "Synthetic" are merely marketing terms with no legal meaning in the U.S. Oils like Motul and Liqui-Moly made in Europe must be by law at least Group 4. SuperTech, Amazon Basics and MAG 1 are all made by Warren. If a Group 3 with no synthetic base works for you, don't buy Mobil 1, Castrol Edge or Pennzoil Platinum which are overpriced Group 3. Buy the SuperTech. If you race, have a turbo, or tow, you might want a Group 4.
