Tragic Things That Have Happened To American Idol Contestants

- We all know that fame doesn't make you immune to personal tragedies. But when terrible things happen to the young stars on American Idol, it almost feels like it's happening to a friend. Here are some of the worst things that have happened to Idol contestants.
Joanne Borgella, Season 7
Joanne was diagnosed with a rare form of endometrial cancer about a year ago. She passed away on October 18th, 2014.
Paula Goodspeed, Season 5
After being rejected in the initial auditions of season 5, it was rumored that Paula was stalking Paula Abdul, who was then a judge on the show. Paula Goodspeed committed suicide outside of Paula Abdul's home in 2008.
Michael Johns, Season 7
Michael suffered an injury to his ankle, resulting in a blood clot. This ultimately claimed his life at the age of 35.
Danny Gokey, Season 8
Danny was very open about the tragedy that struck just 4 weeks before he auditioned for the show. His wife Sophia underwent routine surgery for congenital heart disease, but died from complications. Danny set up a foundation called Sophia's Heart to help those in need, and 4 years after Sophia's death, he remarried.
Alexis Cohen, Seasons 7 & 8
Hopeful Alexis Cohen tried out for Idol 2 consecutive seasons, but never made it past the first round. In 2009, she was killed in a hit-and-run accident in New Jersey.
Jessica Phillips, Season 11
Jessica shared a heart-wrenching story during her audition in Portland. She said that her boyfriend of 5 years suffered a stroke while celebrating a friend's birthday. He was in the hospital for a month and a half, and when he finally woke up, he didn't recognize Jessica. Now, Jessica stated she is more of a caretaker and there is a different kind of love between them now.
Fantasia Barrino, Season 3
After a tumultuous relationship with her then-boyfriend, Fantasia reportedly attempted suicide in 2010.
Angela Martin, Seasons 7 & 8
Angela was on the show several times, but was never able to get past the Hollywood auditions. Between the 7th and 8th seasons, her father was killed.
Angela Martin, Season 9
Angela returned for Season 9, and revealed that her mother had been missing. As far as we know, she still hasn't been found.
Lee Dewayze, Season 9
Lee didn't speak on the show about a horrific tragedy that took place in his family in 2004. His 80-year-old grandmother Eileen was murdered by her own son John, Lee's uncle.
Jennifer Hudson, Season 3
In 2008, Hudson suffered one of the most horrific blows anyone could ever face - her mother, brother, and young nephew were all brutally murdered.
Kree Harrison, Season 12
Kree was very open on the show about her tragic situation - her father died in a plane crash when she was 12 and her mother died in a car accident just a few years later.
