Man Scotty speak the truth about eight nine years ago I bought myself a 1997 850 Volvo for $1,000 and I put a lot of energy into it to get it right even replace the head gasket vacuum hoses all of that for $1,000 and a turbo at that

One note about those cheap car painting places.... If there is any rust, most of them will refuse to do the paint job. Maaco for example, will not touch a car with rust on it, last I checked.

I’m reinventing my life and starting from rock bottom. My credit is 100% ruined. I left my high paying salary job to go to school for a different career. I now work a job that pays a fraction of what I used to make. So, I’m downgrading. I have a 2013 fiat that is upside down in value and I’m behind on payments. For the payment and costs me $550 a month. Here is the silver lining of my situation...I’ve been GIVEN a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am in MINT condition with less than 65000 miles on it. It has a new a/c too. It smells musty from age...but I think I can detail it and fix that. I’m going to surrender my fiat to the creditors and save that $ instead while I go to school. My credit is crap anyway. We live in a house that’s paid for. I’d rather drive an old car, save $, repair my credit and start fresh.

Beater cars are fun to work on because you can see the progress from an old beat up car to a car that's actually not too bad...It's a satisfying dad always told me it's surprising what a coat of paint will do...

Yeas ago my parents neighbor had a chevy Acadian sitting in the driveway for years that they never used...I looked at it one day and realized it was in really good shape inside and out but had flat tires...I offered $100.00 for the car that was excepted....Took it home.....cleaned it up.Spray painted it with Tremclad...blew up the tires and drove that car for 2 years...There was no rust on the car and the interior was almost like new...It finally broke down at the side of the road on my way home from work one day...had it towed and got $25.00 for scrap...So l drove it for 2 yrs for $75.00...

I worked for the city works dept. in the vehicle service center where they worked on the hydro trucks...buses etc...I remember all the mechanics drove beater cars...and l mean cars that had wired up mufflers ..replaced floors and stuff like that..But it is said you never see a shoemaker wear a new pair of shoes..It was said that they did not want the general public seeing a parking lot full of expensive cars because they would question on where their tax money was being spent... but I was a young man at the time and had a souped up Merc' Cougar... It was gorgeous...

I once bought an Audi 100(1976) with a bad cylinder head, its brakes ok until one freezing day. I got 3 years out of it, having spent $700 and gotten $650 in a trade-in. It WAS an adventure every day, as to would it start and would it stop, but I miss it. Super reliable cars are the ultimate luxury but that predictability can be boring...So, if you see that car along the roadway for sale at a price that defies good sense(cheap?), consider buying it, but beware...

I agree what he says but where are they at? I have been on many websites and I do not see beater cars from owners in fact the opposite...from owners. What is the average input into a beater care when you first get it?

I stopped caring about cosmetic damage a while back. I bought a pack of vinyl car bandages, and when it's bad enough I just stick it over the ding/scrape and call it a day.

Just bought a 2001 Corolla smashed up fender which damaged the suspension. The son slid into a tree when a deer ran in the road. Didn’t seem to damage anything else like the frame of the car. Got it for $300 with just 147,000 miles on it

Most of what he says is true. However here in Mass and a few other states insurance is largely based on liability and lawsuits. So no matter how cheap your car your insurance can still be very high because of potential lawsuits. I don't think anybody here is paying $350 a year for insurance.
