Question: how do you find a fairly priced, reliable beater if you are not mechanically inclined, you want a reliable vehicle and you have to pass annual state inspections, especially with rusted subframe or body issues in the northeast?

When my kids and grandkids started driving (I have another one soon to drive), they know my rule: Your first car is a beater. The rationale: When you are a new driver, you're gonna bounce off of one thing and bang into another. See, it's just this simple, kids - A license means you MAY drive, it does mean you CAN. Get the hang of driving, then feel free to get something nicer. Only, Dad/Pop Pop isn't buying that one!

New to the channel. I like this guy and his energy. He's speaking facts. Buying a brand new car is a waste of money to me.

I have a 17 WRX and I just bought a 95 Crown Vic for my beater with 152k miles. Needs some TLC but very solid body with barely any rust. I'll drive that baby and keep the Subaru nicer!

Who’s going to steal a beater? Well, that depends. Some older cars and trucks are among the most stolen vehicles in the United States, due to the value of the parts. Notable examples include the 2000 Jeep Cherokee, 2001 Dodge Ram, 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, 2006 Ford F-150, 1997 Honda Accord and 2000 Honda Civic.

I bought a certified used MX-5 with under 5k miles on it, kept my Ford Focus as a beater car instead of trading it in for peanuts.

We only drive beater cars. Why? Because we don't want to throw money away for a box of sheetmetal, bolts, and nuts to get from point A to point B. We do maintain them pretty well though. We have had new cars in the past and our present two cars...a Audi A6 and a Hyundai Entourage are the two most reliable cars we have ever had.

Shopping for one now. Made the mistake of buying a high mile Audi with excellent service record for my beater car. Well, that lasted all of 3 more miles. Thanks to scotty’s videos, I won’t do that again. Looking for a Japanese beater, or considering a Ford Focus I’ve found maybe?

My car is beaten up and old but I still prefer driving it over new ones and why I refuse to buy a new one. I like it more than any new car made today.

I bought a 2007 Saturn Aura with 161,000 miles it for $2,400 (probably overpaid) it drove fine until it hit 205,000 in which one by one stuff started to break. First the radiator cracked at the bottom and the the thing overheated when I was about 20 minutes from home. Got that replaced for $450. Then the water pump blew so I had that replaced along with the thermostat for good measure $360. Then the radiator hoses busted since those were still original and this new unit was working so well. I replaced all of those myself for about $20. Then coming home a week later I stopped for gas, finished pumping and tried to start. Dead. After much deliberation and trial and error which included replacing all of the stater relays and the starter itself (I did myself for $35 on eBay) it turns out it was the fuse panel in the engine was melting and shorting out. Apparently that was going to be a $1,000 fix anyplace in called and I couldn’t find a used one online that looked good. So i parted ways with the old girl for a $1,000 as-is at 206,000 miles.
