  • I am not sponsored by Amazon, Mobil 1, or Valvoline. I bought all the products for this test using my own money. Dozens of viewers requested this video. I'm not part of the Amazon Affiliate Program either, since I'm not trying to sell products. I do independent testing only. So, thank you very much for the video ideas, including this one! AmazonBasics Fully Synthetic Motor Oil better than Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil? In this video, I tested Valvoline 10W-30 Conventional Motor Oil, AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor OIl, and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Motor oil for cold temperature flow, lubricity, evaporative loss after exposure to approximately 400F for 2 hours, and cold flow of each oil after exposed to heat for 2 hours. Finally, while I don't have a shop full of expensive oil testing equipment, the testing approach I use helps provide good information on the quality of these oil products. Thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support. https://www.patreon.com/projectfarm

DISCLAIMER: The testing methods outlined in this video are my own not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. This is a showdown between AmazonBasics full synthetic motor oil and Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil. The VALVOLINE motor oil used in this experiment is CONVENTIONAL motor oil, NOT SYNTHETIC. The use of the Valvoline conventional motor oil is to illustrate the benefits of that synthetic engine oil has over conventional motor oil. Why buy a conventional motor oil when you can purchase a synthetic motor oil which will outperform conventional oil for around the same price or a little more? The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application.

Projectfarm can you test TES 295 and Amsoil? It is said the Amsoil tried to match the formula and that Transynd would give them a run for the money. I agree as I run TES-295 in my Chevy's and TES-395 in Toyotas.

Great video as always. I would really like to know what is the best motorcycle oil, for example Motul 7100 vs Bardhal. XTC C60 Vs Castrol power 1. Can this be a video idea?

You responded to my other one, maybe you'll respond to this one. I'd love to see a comparison between Amazon Basic and Walmart full synthetic option "Super Tech". It's actually cheaper than the basic for a 5 qt jug. I wonder if it's the same, better, or worse than the Amazon Basic.

I very seriously doubt that Amazon has an oil derrick set up somewhere pumping oil. As with their batteries and countless other items under the Amazon basics name, they've taken someone else's product and put their name on it (Re-branding)

i would like to see a test of rural king branded oil. the conventional and synthetic versus others. I dont use amazon oil but i do use rural king oil in my v10 superduty that i haul a 36 foot fifth wheel camper and use to plow snow so i would be very curious to see how it performs against the name brands.

Maybe I missed one thing about these oils, and that is the retention of the oil on the metal parts that would protect parts on a start up until oil pump puts more oil on them. , I don't know the term for it but would that be tackiness or retention? I might have to watch it again. Pretty interesting.

When this video first came out, I switched to amazon oil for my next oil change in my 06 Chevy Silverado 5.3 V8, that was 5,000 miles ago and I just changed the oil again with amazon. It seems to be doing a good job so far 👍🏼

Sorry I don't believe you did those test exactly the same , firstly if you look at how much Valvoline oil in was in that plastic cup the wheel wasn't getting as much oil as the other two !

There are a host of ancient videos about the various properties that make a good engine oil...as I recall the tests here, while important and interesting are not the whole story and perhaps not the most important. You will have to forgive me for my lack of memory but I think I recall that the ability of an oil to first form a bond with the metal surface that is not degraded or destroyed by heat or mechanical or metallurgical properties/conditions is fairly important. If the oil first forms this bond then can bond to this layer, the oils' performance and duration is improved. All this said, I liked your video and thought it insightful. I would be curious to see some sort of retention time of an oil applied to pistons, rings both static and dynamic tests. Also, I would like to see how much of what was worn off from cylinders in your tests stayed in solution vs precipitated. Do you think a magnet in the oil reservoir is a good idea? I have been using one in my truck and I collect a certain small amount of residue each oil change. Finally, my father swears by Shell Rotella and I noticed Walmart is selling it for gasoline engines again but only in synthetic form. It is not cheap but it is supposed to be very superior. Thanks for the videos/information.

well , i think we just need to know WHO makes the oil for amazon , actually Valvoline crappy performance was not news for me, valvocrap is the worse oil i have ever bought i am not sure why they even stay in business selling oil .
