Today we're testing a viral video that claims dipping sea shells in vinegar over night will turn them to glass. We're testing that out along with a few other acids.

My mom debunked this. We were trying the glass shell and it just made a hole in it. My mom also said that bleach makes shells clear

I took college chemistry. I would have been more fun and educational to do this kind of chemistry. What did work for me was to calculate the chemical reaction.

I would be intrested in seeing if the saw tooth shell could be broken down enough to just the the teeth, and if those teeth could be used for sewing needles?

I think the trick is watered down muriatic acid for 3 seconds, then dip into clean water. It cleans off the calcification. I think the color that came off the shells was dye.

If you ever revisit this, you might try a more concentrated "vinegar". I have some industrial acetic acid. 75% concentration, and the rest is definitely NOT water. I think it's still got methanol in it from whatever process was used to synthesize it. Unfortunately I broke the seal on the bottle trying to find a use for it (I originally ordered it to try to rejuvenate a car battery, then learned that it would make a neurotoxin if I tried that, so I didn't) so I couldn't send you mine. :POf course, no, no matter what concentration of vinegar you use, you're not going to make glass from it. Glass is a silicate; you can't get it from calcium carbonate.

I am pretty sure that they sprayed the shell with some sort of clear plastic that would not react with the acid and then dissolved the shell away leaving only the plastic... essentially making a mold... shells are mostly calcium carbonate (as they said) and when mixed with small quantities of water produces the exothermic reaction... calcium carbide will break down into acetylene in water... much more "bubbly"...
