  • Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30 100% synthetic motor oil competes against Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil in the oil championship finale. Other brands already tested in the oil playoffs include: Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amazon Basics, Quaker State, Lucas, Super Tech, Liqui Moly, Red Line, Kendall, Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Penrite and Schaeffer's, all 5W-30 synthetic motor oils.

Regarding the independent lab oil analysis reports, I had the all the oils tested by an oil testing lab. I'm not sponsored by the testing lab and I paid the normal bulk testing rate. You can view the oil analysis reports for free at https://www.patreon.com/posts/27168208

    Oil Series Video Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjT3B9r2z3fXlvbP3tb9e056Q8O5krrCW

I purchased all of the oils tested in this video and am not sponsored by any of the brands tested, nor do I sell any of the products tested. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Would love to see Amsoil OE vs Amsoil XL. I hear a lot of people say they're the same oil just in two different bottles 😝.

Gotta say, I'm surprised by Pennzoil. I work in auto parts and always leaned towards getting(and selling) the deals on Mobil 1, but after this I'm going to give Pennzoil a spin.

I’d like to see both the Amsoil and Pennzoil UP tested doing 5W-30 versus 5W-20 on your wear tests. A lot of vehicles seem to recommend 5W-20 these days due to tighter bearing tolerances?

Now that you've finished evaluating automotive oils, it would be interesting to compare motorcycle oils. I am not sure what criteria to use since high lubricity is not desirable in wet clutch applications. They have some different additives i.e. anti-foam, etc...

so it used to be that old school Pennzoil, (I don't know if they've been recently bought out or switch formulas in recent years) used to sludge up engines big time . Anyone know is that still the case?

Hi Project Farm,My car uses 0w20 and was interested in your opinion of Penzoil vs Amsoil 0w20. Would the performance be equal or how do you think it would compare with the additive package in that type of oil?

I would like to see Mobil 1 extended protection included. That’s what I have switched to. It’s my understanding that it’s a true “full synthetic”. Idk. May just be wasting my money.

I know this is late but can you test FVP full synthetic oil vs Shell gas truck rotella full synthetic oil? Both at Menards. Then compare the results to the group you've done in the past.

Can you do a shootout of some of the "European car" marketed oils and "Genuine OEM" oils from VW/Audi Mercedes BMW and Porsche? Their formulations are often different. I would specifically love to see Castrol Edge 5w-40 vs Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40 (They don't market an "ultra" platinum in this weight, just "Euro") Also, I would love to know if BMW oil the same as pennzoil platinum/ultra platinum for their respective weights? (they are supposed to be ultra I think) BMW supposedly switched from Castrol to Pennzoil in 2015 which was a huge deal. Love your testing and thanks for doing it!!

The best synthetic oil is without any doubt at all a full synthetic made from natural gas. Simply the best most pure highest temp limit synthetic oil a person can buy today. No other oil can withstand the heat and abuse that the natural gas synthetic oil can. It will have the longest longevity in your car and provide lubrication to your engine long after all other oils will fail.

Unlike others on these comments, your tests have convinced me it's alright to use Super Tech and save a ton of money keeping my cars up. I'm not comfortable with their oil filters, but the oil itself is just as good as the name brands. I'm sold! Thank you for the valuable information.

I'm a wet lab chemist and did oil testing among other products. Your tests are the quick and dirty ones we would use to get a hell of a lot of information quickly and easily. TBN is also a quick test in a wet lab. It's a titration using a standardized base solution to determine how acidic the oil is. Until analytical chemistry got as sophisticated as it is now, just 40 years ago your tests would have worked reasonably well to get a measurable idea of performance. While Amsoil won overall, it's TBN is significantly higher than the other oils. TBN is an important factor in keeping your engine running longer without problems. Changing your oil before the TBN gets too high is vital to prevent corrosion, especially if you plan to keep your car for 200,000+ miles,
