Amsoil or Pennzoil, which wins Championship? Let's find out!

  • Published on: 10 June 2019
  • Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30 100% synthetic motor oil competes against Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil in the oil championship finale. Other brands already tested in the oil playoffs include: Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amazon Basics, Quaker State, Lucas, Super Tech, Liqui Moly, Red Line, Kendall, Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Penrite and Schaeffer's, all 5W-30 synthetic motor oils.

Regarding the independent lab oil analysis reports, I had the all the oils tested by an oil testing lab. I'm not sponsored by the testing lab and I paid the normal bulk testing rate. You can view the oil analysis reports for free at

    Oil Series Video Playlist:

I purchased all of the oils tested in this video and am not sponsored by any of the brands tested, nor do I sell any of the products tested. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support.

I have a 2015 Infiniti q40...just did an oil change I happened to be running pennzoil...should I change to Amsoil?

  • RedBeard

i think it all depends on how long you want to change your oil. It seems any oil listed here has what you car needs to meet the manufactures 10-15k mile oil change services. I use motul and it came in behind other oils. but Ive done 10,000 miles oil changes in a turbo engine with only a 1/4 quart loss and still had TBN left. The oil hadnt broken down and can assume from the TBN and viscosity that another 5k miles would have been fine

I don't know if you are gonna see this Project Farm, but please do some international oil tests like the Motul 300V Factory Line from France and other ultimate oils, and then pit it against the best of the US brands like Amsoil, like some kind of bonus round on the grand lubricant showdown. Great golden content as always.

Because a lot of us as we get older have the dealer do oil changes I would love to see oils like Ford / motor-craft synthetic blend and others tested.

I would like to see amsoil go head to head with Yamaha lube, klotz, bell ray, and maxima. These oils are big in the powersports industry

Amsoil is barely better and costs three times as much. Pennzoil wins by a large margin if you factor in price. However if I had a car with an engine that was worth 20k or more I wouldn't worry about the cost of oil, I'd just get the best.

This is 100% total BS. Measuring oil performance by additive levels is ridiculous as it fails to take into account the products with superior base oils. Additives are used to offset the drawbacks of base oils. Superior base oils, such as Group IV that is used almost exclusively by Mobil 1, provide FAR more advantages than additives which are quickly depleted as the engine runs. We all can only imagine who's paying this quackster to promote their products!

Could you try a oil comparison for motorcycle specific oils and oils that aren't motorcycle specific but are JASO-MA approved? The hot debate is always Rotella vs the higher end motorcycle specific oils. Id love to see how they really stack up

One thing everyone should know: the properties of oil can vary greatly across different weights of the same brand/line of oil. For example, testing shows that Quaker State Advanced Protection 0w-20 is considerably better than the exact same oil in 5w-20. Even being that close in weight, they show COMPLETELY results in wear testing. The gap is even bigger when heated. Amsoil is consistently one of the best tested oils among many different weights BTW! It's a fantastic oil.

I'd be curious to see the German spec comparisons. They are flagship products. Items like 0w40 ESP, 0w40 Euro from Pennzoil, Mobil 1, and Castrol.

This does not surprise me. I have been using Amsoil for 40 years. I had a 1990 Chevy Lumina and got 350,000 miles on the 3.1 Liter before selling it. I use Amsoil in my 1997 Buick Park Avenue, 1964 F250 and my 1981 Mercedes 240d.

1st : Thank you for the well thought out ideas and all of the time and work you spent to orchestrate such ingenious and elaborate arrays of stress tests to put these products through.2nd : 5 stars for the knowledge and wisdom gained from the unbiased truth from actual physical proof through your inventive scientific methodology's.3rd : Amsoil....WOW!!! Makes all other oils look like they're racing against them with size 27 clown shoes on. It's like SPACE X VS NASA or the SAT scores from a savant compared to a cadaver, lolLastly, keep up the great work, you just gained 1 more subscriber and I'll likely be back to confound, disperse and diminish any dim-witted, self centered, ungrateful, thumbs downing trolls we all seem to have looming among our videos ratings and comment sections with my mind bending, seemingly unending, indubitably phenomenal, linguistically lavish, (I got a PHDoubleD in), palaver! PEACE!

Outstanding Video!!! Thank you! My new Jeep JL recommends Pennzoil 0W20. After seeing this, I stick with it unless I buy Amsoil. It's just hard for me to find Amsoil, the big box store has Pennzoil in stock always! Thanks again.

I have been running Amsoil in all 3 holes and filter of my 05Heritage and in my 4 liter jeep. The jeep leaks no matter what oil is in it but it and the Harley love this oil. I am a fan.

Well, I have been using Liqui Moly on my cars, particularly a diesel sedan I have... I just recently swapped to Pennzoil and your findings somehow confirms what I noticed, but will definitely try Amsoil. It's unreal how a set of well thought out tests by someone genuine; seeking truth can have such an impact... Keep up the great work Todd. Thanks for sharing!
