Amsoil or Pennzoil, which wins Championship? Let's find out!

  • Published on: 10 June 2019
  • Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30 100% synthetic motor oil competes against Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil in the oil championship finale. Other brands already tested in the oil playoffs include: Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amazon Basics, Quaker State, Lucas, Super Tech, Liqui Moly, Red Line, Kendall, Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Penrite and Schaeffer's, all 5W-30 synthetic motor oils.

Regarding the independent lab oil analysis reports, I had the all the oils tested by an oil testing lab. I'm not sponsored by the testing lab and I paid the normal bulk testing rate. You can view the oil analysis reports for free at

    Oil Series Video Playlist:

I purchased all of the oils tested in this video and am not sponsored by any of the brands tested, nor do I sell any of the products tested. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support.

I've used Amsoil in my motorcycles (3) for years, I went so far as to change oil yearly which was in the 9.5 to 10k miles between changes. All of the bikes had around 100k miles on them when I sold them and were running fine with no oil consumption or engine problems. Current bike is a 2008 Concours 14 with 60k miles.

Why did you start the tests with Pennzoil platinum and switch to ultra platinum?

I have been a mechanic for 30 years. Just change your oil frequently!! Please. You can test oil till the cows come home but if you don’t change it when you should, your engine will have a lower life span.

It would be awesome to do a similar challenge for 2 cycle oils, for us outboard motor people.

Great testing, Thanks. I would have liked to have seen if there was any difference in the bearing wear test after the oils had been cooked and chilled to see if the heat degradation affected the oils performance results. New out of the bottle is only the first part of a lubricants life cycle as compared to many hours of lubrication and heat cycles. I think you do a great job testing products and the results you have demonstrated have helped me to make better choices. Thanks again.

My family has been trusting AMSOIL products for over 30yrs. It's the only synthetic products we run in all our vehicles and equipment.

  • HELL WITH IT!! B. L. A.

Penzoil sucks. Maybe synthetic is not like the conventional. The conventional is high in ash and at 16 years of it. You have massive carbon buildup everywhere.

What about a test series like this with oils meant for use in large displacement semi engines? Would be interesting to see how something like a Volvo or Detroit specified oil compares to Cat or Cumkisn

Is amsoil good oil? Maybe. But I did not have a chance to find out because they did not send my order but did not forget to charge credit card. Their dealers are just as user friendly - one simply did not show up for the appointment, another one quoted $12/qu a few days before he quoted $17. The third sent me to a local chevy (?) dealer because - as he explained - he hates doing business with assholes [amsoil]. I'm done trying. I've driven millions of miles without overpriced jump-through-the-hoops royalty, and I'm sure as hell will drive millions more without it.

Just changed my oil and used Royal Purple for the first time. It was on sale for $30 for 5 qts and a free premium synthetic filter. I was pretty happy until I saw this. Should've stuck with the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum that I regularly use.

The test should include the best oils that fit the specification of "factory fill" for heavy duty diesel engines. Oils with these specifications include Amsoil, Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Phillips 66, Citgo, Kendall, AND one that does not have all of the marketing and corporate overhead added to it, namely Sinopec. These need to be tested in the low-viscosity 5-40 full synthetic. This vis is the latest and newest spec and the heavy service side (of the low vis) which might also include 5-30 for fuel economy line haul applications. For Demand Detroit recommendation for FA-4 spec, see: low vis / extended service interval oils are usually something that is not yet a high mover and therefore cannot usually be sourced at the first store that sells oil. A few can be found at a truck stop. While the Sinopec 15W40 T700 CK-4 Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil is available in 5 Gallon / 18 Liter buckets at, the Sinopec 5W40 T700 FA-4 is only available in 55 gallon drums at respective distribution centers. You can find one according to your zip code and may find someone that is using now to break a drum to get you the needed quantity. Sinopec is gaining in its market share of "factory fill" market. After the comparison of specification and tested performance, these oils are differentiated their marketing and delivery channels, so there are some trade offs between: (best product); (best service); and (best price). The last two will vary according to whether the user wants a carry out pail or a tanker truck load. Obviously, the greatest utility would be to the fleet user that can consume 100 gallons or more per day and compare costs and service for bulk delivery. Basically, the value of the test is to pull away the "Wizard of Oz Curtain" to determine the objective comparison of relative value to relative costs. After the motor lube, then test same companies products for transmission fluids, gear lubes and filters. It seems that of the abrasive test you ran, the Blackstone analysis gave good clues (according to the respective oil's wear pack). The cooking of the oil seemed to result in evaporation rates that might have been within the confidence interval. The cold weather flowability seemed to be very easy to replicate, but whether most engines that are started at zero F and above would know the difference, between the slow and faster ones, is unlikely.Let me know how I can help.

What would it take to encourage you to do perhaps a 6 or 8 oil test for the best full synthetic 5-40 diesel oils used in trucks and yellow equipment?
