  • People keep finding bugs in iPhones, and other people keep asking me to make videos about them. So here you go! Here's a tale of binary, of the Unix epoch, and a date beyond the lifespan of the universe.

The bug was likely caused by time zones. Setting a limit of 1970-01-01 00:00 will stop someone in (or West of) Greenwich from breaking the system, that time in Paris is T-minus-3600 from the Unix Epoch. Similarly, those of us in the West have the reverse problem of setting a time that doesn't have a valid value in our own time zone (e.g. Time-Zero in UTC is in 1969 in the US, which violates the limit, and trying to convert the timestamps without using negative numbers is tricky).

Haven't watched yet, but being a programmer I can tell you that 1/1/1970 is the beginning of the UNIX Epoch

Guy with a chat website with a pint system couldn't kick me off because of this I speculate; no one liked me so my point never went beyond 0 and moderators who time out your account subtract like points but I couldn't be banned despite a messege saying I was in the chat and the site owner had to manually ban my IP address

A problem which could have been easily avoided if the idiots at apple has used twos complement, using 63 bits for time instead of 64 (146 billion years instead of 292). Considering apple's own experience using twos complement on the Apple II (-32768 to 32767), they have no excuse.
