Is Royal Purple better than Amsoil? Let's find out!

  • Is Royal Purple's full synthetic 5W-30 motor better than Amsoil's 100% synthetic 5W-30 motor oil? In this video both products go head to head in several tests. Both Amsoil and Royal Purple are very high quality synthetic motor oils. I bought both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Amsoil or Royal Purple, and I do not sell Amsoil or Royal Purple products. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Royal purpose has performance additives for more horse power. You didn’t test for that.

My '95 Chevy C1500 idled smoothly except for the occasional hiccup with Royal Purple. I put in Mobil 1 extended performance and after about 200 miles the engine idled so smooth I had to look at the tachometer to see if it was still running. I am not impressed with Royal Purple. Iv'e used Amsoil in the past and it is really good oil, just a little hard to find sometimes. Thank You for the video Sir.

Is amsoil good oil? Maybe. But I did not have a chance to find out because they did not send my order but did not forget to charge credit card. Their dealers are just as user friendly - one simply did not show up for the appointment, another one quoted $12/qu a few days before he quoted $17. The third sent me to a local chevy (?) dealer because - as he explained - he hates doing business with assholes [amsoil]. I'm done trying. I've driven millions of miles without overpriced jump-through-the-hoops royalty, and I'm sure as hell will drive millions more without it.

Have you done any testing with Schaeffer oil? I'd like to see that. It's very popular here in the midwest

Just changed my oil and used Royal Purple for the first time. It was on sale for $30 for 5 qts and a free premium synthetic filter. I was pretty happy until I saw this. Should've stuck with the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum that I regularly use.

Regardless of what you use, a modern engine will last a long long time with regular oil changes. Now, if you're talking drag racing, that's a different story.

One request I would like to make is to take 7 grams of tungsten disulphide .06 micron and add it to am oil like amsoil conventional and synthetic in these same tests.

Glad this confirms what I researched. Use Amsoil Signature Series every 3k miles for my turbo frs, no complaints. Track temp usually doesn’t go above 250ish

Just a quick observation here and please correct me if I'm here:Amsoil is top notch, but why test the Amsoil Signature series vs the base Royal Purple that is not much better than regular Mobil 1 Syn? Since the new company bought out RP, the base oil has none of the original additives that made it so good and competitive. Many of us have complained about them removing the additives and adding it to higher tiered RP oil for insane prices. Use the top tier royal Purple with Synerlec like the RP HPS. and Royal Purple XPR. Seen this in another test as well by another "oil guy" and he was called out for this. TBH though, you won't go wrong with either one of the oils as long as it's the top tier stuff. Love the presentation though and keep up the good work.

Amsoil full synthetic is awesome. I used it for the first time when I drove my car from Texas to Michigan. 1500 mile trip. The oil was pretty clean and it didn't burn any oil. I normally use Mobil 1 full synthetic and amsoil outperformed it. I've also used Royal Purple, and Amsoil was better than that as well.

If you're already dropping 3x $ on royal purple, you might as well drop a few more $ and get the best, Amsoil!

I changed oil in a friend's vehicle today with Mobil Super Synthetic. It only cost $1 more to use this than it would have cost to use a conventional oil. I would like to see how Mobil Super Synthetic compares to standard Mobil 1 Synthetic. I'm curious to see why it costs so much less.

Could you do tests on the Royal Purple HPS line? I've used that oil in my vehicles, and it's great. I'm just curious to see what it looks like through your tests.
