How We Domesticated Cats (Twice)

  • Published on: 06 November 2019
  • A 9,500 year old burial in Cyprus represents some of the oldest known evidence of human/cat companionships anywhere in the world. But when did this close relationship between humans and cats start? And how did humans help cats take over the world?

Big thanks to these paleoartists for allowing us to use their wonderful illustrations:
Julio Lacerda (who illustrated the Cyprus grave site):
Ceri Thomas (who illustrated Felis silvestris lybica):

I used to love cats. I used to think they were far more intelligent and clean than dogs. Having lived with my girlfriend's cat for several months now... cats are some of the most obnoxious things that have ever lived. At least in domesticated settings. Like every wild animal, they play a role in a wild ecosystem.

Well it was punishable by death to hurt cats in the Egyptian era, they were offered gold and milk by people, and then at the later ages of their life they got mummified which was sacred thing for higher people.

The Egyptians were smart, they knew there was something special about cats, if a pet cat died the family would go into a similar state of mourning as if a family member died. See that's what a cat needs, not treats like dogs, they need respect

Cat actually domesticated us to feed them and provide shelter. It's all their masterplan. That's why you see cats looking at you everywhere you go because they keep surveillance to ensure maximum cooperation. I need to go, my cat is wak
