Advertisements! | British VS American | Evan Edinger & Jay Foreman

  • Published on: 21 July 2019
  • Advertisements and commercials vary so much between the US and the UK! In today's episode of British VS American, Jay Foreman and I will look into some of the weirder differences and discover a lot more than we expected about ads and some things we've been missing out on across the pond!
    Jay Foreman:

Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it! No but seriously. Thanks for all the support recently. I've been putting so much more effort into planning future videos, getting new people on, and editing the videos much more intricately. Thanks again so much for the support. x

If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)

If one advert from your country had to win "Best Ad of All Time" which one would it be?

Funny. I live in Quebec, Canada and we have a version of that car repair jingle on the same beat as well. Guess it’s a world wide used jingle!

UK TV started as cable, NOT broadcast, so National TV was distinct from the local cable network.

ITV does still have (some) localised ads and news programmes. I know this because my job requires me to travel round the UK and it's different in every region.

Jay Foreman forgetting that the UK is not just England, again? Quelle Surprise!Jay, you brought up regional TV, and then moved on to explaining how the phrase "National TV" annoys you because it doesn't apply in the UK. You might want to pay attention to what you're saying, if you want to appear less foolish.

They have regional area adverts especially on HD. So I live in Wiltshire and I get adverts for shopping centres and car dealerships in the West Country only.

Whenever reminded of Calgon, I only ever remember the Czech translation of the song, and even then it's not very clear, but I can hear the tune... and the last three words.

They do different accents on adverts depending on where you are in the country, the North will get you a Scot or a Geordie, Belfast will get you an Antrim narrator etc.

Jay's right about TV being the same across Great Britain, but in Northern Ireland I know there's no ITV. Instead we have UTV.

I’m an American and while I knew product placement was a thing in movies and TV shows I only saw it as things such as a strategically placed can of Pepsi on the desk of the police officers desk during the suspect interrogation but an episode of “Bones” was the first time where I actually noticed a product placement being placed in the shows script. It was a police chase scene and the FBI agent was driving in a Toyota Sienna mini van. They were talking about the features that the van had that assisted the agents during the chase and how comfortable the seats were. It was extremely annoying and disappointing how the studio would just sell out to Toyota like that.

In Liverpool the only channel we have that’s “local” is called Liverpool local tv and it’s a very new channel that’s come about in the last couple years. It’s like a low budget news channel that reports things about the city and the surrounding areas. Funny you mentioned it!

There has been an exploison of celebrity endorsements in British ads recently. Those Direct Line ads where Harvey Keitel reprises his role as The Fixer in Pulp Fiction. Also Kevin Bacon frequently appears in ads for the mobile network EE, Sean Bean's the voice of O2, Idris Elba sells Sky and Mads Mikkelsen is the face of Carlsberg.

We do have local (or rather regional) adverts in the UK, but they are quite rare because even regional advertising is so expensive. I live in Bristol and we get adverts for Bristol and South-Wales based businesses, usually within the local news programmes.
