The real question is why hasnt anyone made a combination of both, chain and synthetic material that would snap before stretching.

I love my ford Rangers. They have a timing belt and a non interference engine. (4 cyl) I change my own belts and they last forever. The belt cost about 40 bucks and I can change it in about 2 hours now. I've owned several rangers now and loved them all and have been driving them for over 30 years now. The lima engine is easy to work on and very reliable. Some day I might be forced to get one with the newer style engine so I hope it's just as good as the older one.

My Toyota's belt, the best I got was about 70k miles, and it was pretty beat! But it cost a few pounds to get it changed.

Chains do NOT stretch. Any increase in length is because of wear in link pins and bushes.

My S2000 has timing chain but my Odyssey has timing belt, which I changed at 100,000 miles. It's about 145K miles now. Both vehicles have been very reliable.

13 years ago I bought an Audi TT- but made sure it was the 3.2L six- because it had a timing chain (and 25 more horsepower than their best turbo 4 )That engine has been bulletproof.

My car has both. Its 2013 Hyundai Veloster Base and according to repair/maintenance/assembly manual it has both which I found surprising.

I don't mind the noise, that I have never noticed. But I have had enough problems with the rubber belts so I will never again have a car without the chain. I mostly prefer Mercedes but I can make exception if needed ( in most cases not). On my motorcycles there's always the chain, and for reason.

My 2012 Nissan Rogue SV has a timing chain. So did my 2007 Infiniti G35x, and that's basically an all wheel drive upgraded version of a Nissan Maxima.

Chains are good... Until someone like BMW decides to put lightweight crappy bicycle style chains in the N47 engine. Just Google ' N47 timing chain issues'

Few months ago I was smoking outside when my neighbor turned her car on and I could hear really loud rattling noise. Told her that her timing chain needs to be changed and gave my friends number as he's mechanic. Later my friend told me that it's probably the original chain as he never seen the one that was as bad as it was on the car. That car(BMW E60 530D) had over 600 000 km (almost 400 000 miles on it)

Nice job attacking Nissan and not Honda, who still uses belts on v6s and requires a $2000 "belt replacement" every 102000 miles (and some old Honda guys still claim it needs to be done every 60000 miles). You are right, Nissan has gone away from belts, but you should say Honda still uses them.
