Comparing other engines with a ford v6?? Can tell you're a yank lolHave you ever heard of a Nissan Skyline? The models powered by inline six engines? Give an example of a ford that will compete with that!!

    A inline 6 is got more torque than a v6 or a V8

  • Martin Taper

Scotty, the engine configuration has nothing to do with the torque and power output. Umpteen more variables decide the output. V6 engines require balancing shafts which "subtract" from power and torque output. The main reason for the V6 was space efficiency (nothing to do with output). I also note the makers of the most powerful and most efficient car engines are going back to straight six engines, right now! (Ref: I'm a mechanical engineer, nearly as old as you, and I have been interested in cars and car design for over 50 years.)

Semis use inline sixes... they use less fuel and they’re just as powerful as v8’s aka the saying six in a row ready to tow

Really, line six is making a comeback. It’s simply the best platform available. The only drawback haz been their length but modern engine makers have removed all pulleys fans and pumps from the front. They also made other changes to compensate for the longer crank shaft. What was that crazy comment about more torque from the v6? They may boast higher numbers but in equal size engines the torque curve will never compare to that of a line 6.

Beg to differ about the inline 6 being the best engine Ford made.I think strong arguments could be made that 289ci and the 351ci (Cleveland) were the best engines they made. That said, current V8's Coyote Ford puts in their Mustangs (as well as the 5.2L flat plane motor) are gems.

Scotty you know a straight 6 has more torque. A 300 6 cylinders has more than a 302 v8 that why they use them in equipment applications

I disagree with the oil. My vehicle has 250k miles and i have stepped up from 5w 30 to 10w40. The tolerances have definitely opened up at this high milage

I had a Ford straight 6 in a late 70's pickup with a 4 speed manual transmission. That truck was the best truck I ever owned and it would pull a house down. I get teary eyed at the thought of the good old days and the great simple vehicles we had.

You said the straight 6 has more torque than a v6. The lie detector test has determined that is a lie. Modern V6 engines have more torque and power, but if the Straight 6s had not been left in the dust and had the research and development applied to them, they would still be vastly superior to their V counterpart. I think there are other reasons why they left them behind. I feel like vehicle design is the big one. In the last 20 years, the design of vehicles has shifted toward compactness and aerodynamics. It's harder to incorporate an inline 6 into engine bays of vehicles designed that way, simply because of the engines length. They can design things to fit a v8 l, which is only 4 cylinders deep and a v6 will fit automatically. But an inline 6 is essentially 1.5 times longer because of the two extra cylinders "in the line." The displacements between the 8 and 6 cylender engines were not all that different when they were still offering those. At least with ford. Eg. 300 I6, 302 v8, 35 v8 I dont know if ford was using a v6 at that time, that's how little I care when there is the option of a straight 6 lol

He us wrong. A inline 6 has more torque than a v6. The inline 6 is straight torque and this is why tractors have inline motors. How ever the inline 6 toes not have top in speed or power over the v6 when you get to about 50 mph the v6 will destroy it on performance and speed. Inline 6 is made for low end torque and Power.

The new Nissan GTR should have a inline 6 like the old datsuns but more refined and different than the older inline 6's, Nissan need to go back to their roots, it just might save them. Just saying

Every engine layout has its advantages and disadvantages. A big challenge in high power inline 6 engines is torsional stiffness of the long crank and to a lesser degree camshaft. This obviously isn't insurmountable considering the number of inline 6 semi tractors that use them. Car designers have figured out that you can make more useable space by moving the cab forward and using a shorter engine. I6 engines just don't fit in modern (esp FWD) engine bays. My Civic has such a short hood it almost looks like a micro bus. The car is almost all useable space. I6 engines are great for full size pickups because there is plenty of space for them. The only new I6 I know of is the RAM 250 with 6.7L turbo diesel good for 370 HP and 850 lb-ft of torque. That isn't too shabby.

I6 engines are inherently well balanced, have less valvetrain friction and counterweight losses, have more torque and horsepower. Problem is you have to design a vehicle around the engine, its all about Profit Margins.

Not really Scotty. The Toyota Corolla in the UK has always been a hatchback when the Carolla they were selling here in the US was a sedan. We have a 2002 UK hatchback model and its still going strong. They have finally re-released the Corolla hatchback in the UK and it is the same bodystyle as the one they are now selling here except the UK one is only available as a Hybrid and uses the (yuk) CVT transmissions.

Class 8 trucks have inline sixes only. They tried v8s and some v6s but they were a fail when it comes to hauling heavy. I have a 99 9900 with a 525 N14/855. It puts to shame a 903 v8, that's whey they dropped those turds. Good for cars and grocery pickups
